First impressions

A resort layout that gives you places to explore

The first thing I noticed was how the property stretches inland from the beach. As I walked from the entrance toward the ocean, different areas unfolded along the way: sports courts, the waterfall pavilion, coffee, dining, the lobby, pools, and finally the waterfront.

That layout reminded me of Sandals Saint Vincent. Fountains and water features helped connect the different spaces, and I liked having reasons to explore beyond the main pool.

Near the entrance, I found the courts and BLUM coffee shop. Farther along were Dunn’s Rum Club and Zuka, with the Rondoval suites on the other side of the approach to the lobby.

Finding your room

Rondoval villas and SkyPool suites

Two room styles immediately caught my attention. I viewed these during the property tour, so this wasn’t an overnight review of either room category.

Coyaba Sky Rondoval villas

The round, standalone design gives these villas a different feel from a traditional hotel building. I liked the quieter setting near the front of the resort and the way each villa had its own defined outdoor space.

For the Coyaba Sky Villa Swim-up Rondoval Butler Suite, Sandals lists a rooftop hideaway, private pool, and access to a larger river pool. Your private pool and the shared swim-up water are separate features.

If you want a special room for a honeymoon or anniversary, this would be on my comparison list.

SkyPool suites

The SkyPool suites offer another appealing idea: a pool above ground level with an ocean view. Sandals describes them as suites with a private infinity-edge plunge pool.

From below, I could see their glass fronts. A private pool doesn’t automatically mean complete visual privacy, so that’s worth considering when choosing a room.

Food and drinks

Dining, coffee, and places to have a drink

Dunn’s River currently lists 12 specialty restaurants and nine bars, giving couples plenty of variety across a stay. View the resort’s inclusions .

During my walk, I liked how the dining was distributed around the property. You could make your way toward the entrance for coffee or a drink, then spend another part of the day around the beachfront restaurants.

The current lineup includes Cascata for Italian, Banyu for Pan-Asian dishes, L’Amande for French cuisine, and Edessa for Mediterranean dining. BLUM serves coffee, while Isola Pizzeria and the Jerk Shack provide casual options.

Jamaican coffee is always a highlight for me, and I like bringing some home. I also recommend making time for jerk chicken while you’re in Jamaica. If you’re sensitive to heat, ask about the preparation and sauce options.

One memorable moment from this tour was getting a freshly cut coconut filled with coconut water and coconut rum. I finished part of the walkthrough carrying it around. It was a fun little highlight of this particular visit.

Enjoying the view

Pools, ocean views, and the rooftop

Around the pools, the glass edges and views toward the beach reinforced the modern look that I liked throughout the resort.

I also enjoyed the rooftop bar, Ocarina, where I found couches, lounge seating, and views across the pools toward the ocean. Sandals identifies Ocarina as the resort’s rooftop bar. Read about Dunn’s River’s bar concepts .

The gym was another pleasant surprise. From the treadmills, I could look across the resort and out toward the water. I preferred the outdoor viewing space at Royal Bahamian’s gym, but Dunn’s River still offered a beautiful setting for a workout.

Beyond the lounge chair

Activities worth checking out

On my walkthrough, the watersports area was tucked near Edessa and the dock. It would have been easy to overlook without walking that corner of the property.

Snorkeling, sailing, and paddleboarding are among the resort’s listed included activities. Spa treatments and excursions are optional extras. Explore Dunn’s River activities .

Scuba diving is included for eligible certified divers, subject to program requirements and availability. Certification courses cost extra, and wetsuit rental can also carry a charge, even though standard dive equipment is included. Check Sandals’ scuba details .

What made the difference

Why the service stayed with me

The setting was impressive, but the staff helped make this visit stand out. I repeatedly saw management walking through public areas and stopping to speak with guests.

Those encounters weren’t connected to a complaint. Management was simply present and engaged, and I appreciated that.

Combined with the variety of spaces around the resort, that experience is why Dunn’s River moved to the top of my personal Sandals rankings.
