Sandals Montego Bay Resort Overview by RJT Travels
Sandals Montego Bay is where the Sandals story began. During my visit, I walked the property from end to end to show its beachfront layout, rooms, pools, dining, activities, wedding spaces, and the details couples should consider before booking.
What stood out most was how the resort followed the shoreline. Instead of extending far inland, it stretched from left to right along the beach, putting much of the experience close to the Caribbean Sea.

First impressions
A wide resort built along the beach
During my walkthrough, Sandals Montego Bay felt wide and shallow. The resort followed the shoreline, so moving around generally meant walking left or right instead of traveling deep into the property.
The lobby was large and open, with waterfalls, a lobby bar, and a direct visual connection to the water. From there, I could follow the beachfront past pools, restaurants, sports areas, overwater spaces, and multiple room buildings.
That design created frequent ocean views, but room location mattered. A suite near one end of the property could mean a longer walk to restaurants or activities on the other end.
Before choosing this resort
What to know about the nearby airport
Sandals Montego Bay is very close to Sangster International Airport. That makes the transfer to the resort convenient, but it also means you can hear aircraft arriving and departing.
I noticed the planes during my visit, but the sound did not ruin the experience for me. Travelers react differently to noise, so this is something I would discuss with anyone who is a light sleeper or especially sensitive to aircraft sounds.
The short airport transfer is convenient, but the aircraft noise is a real part of the Sandals Montego Bay experience.
Beach and pools
Ocean swings, hammocks, cabanas, and places to swim
The beachfront provided some of the most distinctive parts of my visit. I found overwater cabanas, swings positioned in the sea, water hammocks, and walkways that extended over the ocean for photos and views back toward the resort.
Latitudes, the overwater bar, added another place to enjoy the setting. Nearby seating and overwater hammocks created a relaxing spot for a drink while listening to the water below.
The pools I toured were smaller than the large pool complexes at some newer Sandals resorts. They were spread around the property instead of being concentrated in one central area. The pool with the swim-up bar and nearby Jerk Shack felt the most like the resort’s main pool during my visit.
Rooms and location
Beachfront rooms and swim-up options
The resort’s shoreline-focused design meant many rooms offered some type of ocean-facing setting during my visit. I also saw several swim-up room areas, including a quieter section near the far end of the property.
Before booking, I recommend comparing the resort map and the exact description of the room you are considering. A room closer to the center can make it easier to reach dining and entertainment, while rooms toward the far end may feel more private.
Food and drinks
Dining around Sandals Montego Bay
During my visit, Butch’s was one of my strongest dining recommendations. I also walked past Soy Sushi Bar and the Jerk Shack, along with casual beachfront dining and bar options around the resort.
Butch’s was my favorite restaurant in the Sandals chain at the time of this visit. I recommend making it a priority if you enjoy steak and seafood. Soy is a good stop for sushi, while the Jerk Shack offers a casual way to try Jamaican jerk flavors during the day.
Restaurant hours and menus can vary during a stay, so check the resort schedule and make any required reservations after arriving.
Beyond the beach
Land activities, the spa, and hidden corners
My walkthrough included tennis and pickleball courts, a beachfront basketball court, sand volleyball, table games, and a croquet area. The property also had a fitness center and a tucked-away Red Lane Spa area with a quiet pool, treatment spaces, steam rooms, and a sauna.
One of the most unexpected finds was a secluded whirlpool hidden among the landscaping behind one of the buildings. It offered a quieter alternative to the busier beachfront and pool areas.
Sandals also offers a variety of included land and water activities. Availability can depend on weather, scheduling, certification requirements, and the activity offered during your stay.
Weddings in Jamaica
Wedding venues at Sandals Montego Bay
I toured two very different wedding settings: a small traditional chapel with religious details and an overwater chapel with glass flooring and panoramic ocean views.
The overwater chapel felt best suited to an intimate ceremony. For a small destination wedding, honeymoon, or vow renewal, the beachfront setting could be a strong fit. Guest count, venue availability, cost, walking distance, and accessibility should all be confirmed before selecting a ceremony space.
My overall impression
Who should consider Sandals Montego Bay?
I would consider Sandals Montego Bay for couples who want a resort with deep Sandals history, extensive beachfront access, convenient airport transfers, and a layout that keeps the ocean visible throughout much of the property.
The main considerations are aircraft noise, walking distances along the resort, room location, and whether you prefer this type of long beachfront layout over a resort built around one central pool area.
Every Sandals resort has its own personality. The right choice depends on how you want to spend your vacation and which details matter most to you.
